Timothée Chalamet simply can't catch a break throughout awards season.
The “Dune” and “Unknown” star spent part of his “Saturday Night Stay” monologue lamenting the fact that he seems to consistently underperform at major awards reveals.
“It's a huge honor to have these awards announced. It's a great expertise,” Chalamet said. “But I just keep going down. Every time, pretending it doesn't sting becomes more durable.” Featuring a montage of Chalamet's frustrated expressions at previous Golden Globes and Oscars ceremonies.
Chalamet, who was nominated for a best actor Oscar for his role as music icon Bob Dylan in the biopic “Unknown,” has been performing less well on the show than he does every week. This marks the second Oscar nomination for Chalamet in his career, having previously been nominated in the same category for his film Name Me After You.
Chalamet later admitted that he could have given an acceptance speech but never got the chance to take advantage of it. So he asked the audience to admire him as he handed a small envelope to a man sitting in the front row, while Chalamet was eager to get on stage and deliver his speech. However, when the man learned the winner's title from the envelope, it turned out to be Keenan Thompson.
When Thompson accepted the Oscar, he said: “To my fellow nominees, what you did over the course of these 12 months was probably pretty remarkable. Anyway, I love Bob Dylan. That's for you, Bob!” When Chalamet asked Thompson if he could at least introduce the gift, Thompson responded: “Oh yeah, go ahead, little bitch.”
Bob Dylan is mentioned repeatedly in the monologue, with Chalamet commenting on Dylan to Willy Wonka, who also plays Willy Wonka. “Each of them was eccentric. Each of them was an innovator, and as a result each of them captured and enslaved large numbers of Opalumpa people.”
As previously introduced, Chalmette is pulling double duty on SNL as both a musical guest and an internet host for the January 25 episode. Although this is Chalamet's first time as a musical guest, he has hosted NBC's long-running sketch series twice before.
