Independent animation producer and publisher Gkids and Japanese stop-motion animation studio Dwarves introduced their collective development of a new animated film (“Tekkonkinkinkreet”), based primarily on Taiyo Matsumoto’s unique autobiographical manga “Sunny”. The mission was held at the Annecy Animation showcase in Cannes, part of the upcoming Cannes Animation Day, a joint move between the Marché Du film and the Annecy competition at the Cannes Film Festival.
The Eisner Award-nominated manga “Sunny” portrays a group of young people who work through numerous attempts to get the Japanese Media Arts Competition Excellence Award and the Shogakukan Manga Award.
Michael Arias will write and direct the film. He introduced the 2006 “Tekkonkinkreet” in advance, based mainly on the comics of Matsumoto's same logo performed among competitors in the Berlin movie competition and won the largest animation feature of the Japan Academy Award. Arias has served as the translator of Matsumoto's works added.
Arias describes “Sunny” as “about young people, their creativity and innocence opportunities – half Dickens, half Felini and all the hearts of coronary arteries.” He said: “I am very happy to work with the artists and animators of the Dwarves to bring this comic masterpiece to the display screen.”
Cease-Motion Studio Dwarf's credit reflects the Netflix series “Pokémon Concierge” and a brief introduction to the Oscar nomination “Bottle George”. A brand new feature film “Hidari” is currently being produced.
